Huskies top Detroit Lakes

The Huskies topped Section 8AAA rival Detroit Lakes 77-66 on the road last Friday.
"Our varsity guys played a tremendous game on both ends of the floor against a very talented Laker squad," said Huskie coach Cory Schlagel.
Kyle Birr scored a career high 25 points (5 3's), Nick Raeker scored 21 (3 3's), and Dalton Finken recorded another double-double with 10 points 10 rebounds.
Albany led 35-26 at half time.

Huskies boys' basketball thrashes Foley

The Albany Huskies boys' basketball team defeated visiting Foley 63-42 in a Granite Ridge Conference game on Thursday night. Ten points each from Kyle Zierden and Dalton Finken led a group of 11 Albany players who scored in the game. With their third win in a row, Albany is 11-3 overall and makes the long trip to Detroit Lakes for a Section 8-3A match up on Friday. The Lakers are 9-4 overall and 5-1 (first) in the Mid-State Conference.

The Huskies are 7-1 in the Granite Ridge Conference in second place. Foley is 1-9 in the GRC and 5-14 overall.

Huskies girls' basketball prevails over Sauk Centre

In a battle of former sub-section and conference rivals, the Albany Huskies girls' basketball team defeated visiting Sauk Centre 58-46 to stay undefeated in a Monday night make-up game. Now 12-0 overall, the Huskies look to improve on their 5-0 mark in the Granite Ridge Conference when Little Falls visits the AHS gym tomorrow night (Tuesday). The Flyers are 3-11 overall and 2-4 in the GRC.

Sauk Centre falls to 9-1 overall with the loss. They were ranked fifth in the latest Class 2A state rankings. The Huskies were seventh in Class 3A in the same poll.

Huskies beat Zimmerman

Kyle Birr’s three-pointer near the end of the half put the Huskies up 29-21 against Granite Conference rival Zimmerman Jan. 14 at Albany. The Huskies jumped to a 20-point lead in the second half, 43-23, but the Thunder closed the gap to within seven with three and a half minutes left. The Huskies controlled the pace the rest of the way to win the game 55-42 and hand the Thunder their first conference loss of the season. Leading scorer for the Huskies was Dalton Finken with 14. Nick Raeker added 13. The win gives Albany a 5-1 conference record and 9-3 overall for second place in the conference. St. Cloud Cathedral sits on top at 5-0 and Zimmerman is in third place at 4-1.

Huskies beat Little Falls, but fall to Sartell-St. Stephen The Huskies last week defeated Little Falls, but lost to Sartell-St. Stephen. The Huskies traveled to Little Falls Jan. 9 and won the Granite Ridge Conference game 67-49. Against non-conference Sartell-St. Stephen, Albany lost 53-41 to their Section 8AAA rival at Albany in a Saturday night game Jan. 11. Albany is 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference. They play Zimmerman Tuesday,travel to Annandale Thursday and host Milaca Friday.

Albany girls' basketball is 10-0

Faced with the difficult challenge of picking up a win at Staples-Motley, one of the top teams in Class 2A, the Albany Huskies girls' basketball team delivered a terrific performance in a 62-52 win over the Cardinals for a 10-0 start to the season.

It's Staples-Motley's second loss of the year after an 8-0 start. Richfield, a Class 3A team, beat the Cardinals on Jan. 3 in Staples.

Albany has a small break in competition before entertaining Milaca next Thursday, Jan. 16 in a Granite Ridge Conference game.

Huskies take it to LP-GE, boys' basketball beats Flyers

The Albany girls' basketball team made quick work of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle last night in a home game against the former conference and section rival Thunder. Now 9-0 overall, the Huskies have a much tougher game tonight when they travel to Staples-Motley to face a very good 8-1 Cardinals team. Staples-Motley beat LP-GE 93-19 on Dec. 17 in Long Prairie.

At Little Falls last night, the Albany boys' basketball team improved to 8-2 overall with a 67-49 win over the Flyers (7-6, 3-3) in a Granite Ridge Conference game. The win helps Albany keep pace for first place in the GRC with a 4-1 record. Sitting in first is St. Cloud Cathedral and Zimmermann, both 4-0 each. Albany's next game is tomorrow, Saturday, at home in an evening non-conference contest with Sartell-St. Stephen. The Sabres are on a four-game losing streak but sit in a three-way tie for third place in the Central Lakes Conference at 3-2.

Today the Albany wrestling team competes in a tournament at Osakis beginning at 4 p.m. Other teams included are Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, Kimball Area, Ottertail Central and Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus.

The Albany Pawettes dance team competes at the Rocori invitational tomorrow that starts at 12 p.m.

Huskie girls remain unbeaten


The Albany Huskies remain unbeaten at 8-0 as they defeated Granite Ridge rival Foley 69-40 at Albany Jan. 3.
Amazih Eickhoff paced the Huskies with 26 points while Vanessa Spohn scored 16.
The Huskies opened the game with 10 unanswered points and by half time led 46-18.
Albany takes on Sauk Centre this Tuesday in a non-conference home game.
