Volleyball bounced from sub-section playoffs

A season marked with a huge level of improvement and strong play came to an end last night when the Rocori Spartans quickly swept the Albany Huskies volleyball team out of the Sub-Section 6AA-North playoffs. Game scores were 25-11, 25-13, 25-12.

The Spartans, now 21-7 overall, finished 10-2 in the Central Lakes Conference tied for second place with Fergus Falls. They were just one match out of first place, with Alexandria winning the CLC title with an 11-1 mark.

The Huskies finish the season 19-11 overall with a 1-1 mark in the playoffs. They got extremely hot at the latter half of the season, winning 12 of their final 14 matches heading into sub-sections. Lost to graduation will be hitter Amazih Eickhoff and setter Abby Schultz, leaving a huge corps of returners for what should be an even better 2014 season.

Huskies seeded fifth in football

The Albany Huskies football team was seeded fifth in the six-team Section 8-4A in the rankings released this morning.

They take a 3-5 record up to Fergus Falls (seeded number four) next Tuesday night, Oct. 22 for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Otters are also 3-5 overall and compete in the Central Lakes Conference.

Top-seeded Detroit Lakes (7-1) and second-seeded Thief River Falls (6-2) both get a first-round bye.

Huskies football blasts Zimmerman

The Albany Huskies football team finished the regular season with a bang as they piled up seven touchdowns in a 43-23 win at Zimmerman on Wednesday night. Sophomore signal-caller Taylor Fourre had ice in his veins as he completed eight of his nine pass attempts for 130 yards while running in two touchdowns and passing to Nick Raeker for a 37-yard touchdown plus two two-point conversion passes. Nick Mergen was the leading rusher for Albany with 18 carries for 102 yards.

The Huskies improved to 3-5 overall and now wait for the QRF rankings to come out and assign the final Section 8-4A standings for the playoffs. It's possible the Huskies could host a first-round playoff game if they earn the number four seed by out-placing Fergus Falls (3-5) in the rankings. The section has only six teams, so the top two would get a first-round bye. They will likely be Detroit Lakes (7-1) and Thief River Falls (6-2). Little Falls will be the likely three-seeded team with a record of 4-4.

In the final Granite Ridge Conference standings, Albany finished in fifth place alone (3-4) out of seven teams.

2013 final Granite Ridge Conference standings:
1st) Becker 7-0
2nd) Foley 5-2
3rd tie) Little Falls, Cathedral H.S. 4-3
5th) Albany 3-4
6th tie) Milaca, Zimmerman 2-5
8th) Mora 1-6

In the Granite Ridge Conference cross country championships hosted by Albany on Wednesday, the Huskies boys' team finished fourth. The Huskies girls' team finished sixth. St. Cloud Cathedral was the boys' champion, while Little Falls won the girls' division.

Albany's volleyball team (18-10) has earned the number-three seed in Sub-Section 6AA-South. Dassel-Cokato (23-3) is the number-one seed, while Rocori (19-7) is seeded number two. Playoffs begin with a quarterfinal round match on Friday, Oct. 25 at Albany high school at 7 p.m. The Huskies host sixth-seeded Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. The semifinal round is the following Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at Albany high school if the Huskies win the first-round match.
