Carter Holthaus, a junior at Albany Area high school, won the 152-pound Section 6AA championship this past weekend at the New London-Spicer high school. He advances to the Class 2A state tournament next weekend at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Holthaus won a tough semifinal match over Cameron Steffen of NL-S in an 11-7 decision. In the championship against Eric Dudek of Becker, Holthaus won a 4-0 decision to claim the individual title.
Matt Schlangen, the only other member of the Albany Huskies wrestling team to make it to the finals, finished in fourth place in the 113-pound division.
Other Huskies competing on day two included Eric Schmitt, Brady Winkels, Jordan Kittelson and Leo Kerfeld.
On another note, congratulations to the Albany Huskies girls' basketball team, as they finished the Granite Ridge Conference schedule undefeated at 16-0 in their inaugural season in the league. They beat Becker 63-33 on Friday night to complete the regular season and conference schedule.
Playoffs begin next Thursday night with a home game against Pierz at 7 p.m. The Huskies (23-3 overall) are the fourth seed, while the Pioneers (14-12, 8-6 Central Minnesota Conference for third place) are the fifth seed.
