Albany baseball, softball teams beat Paynesville Area

In West Central North Conference action tonight, the Albany baseball team defeated Paynesville Area 4-3 to square their overall record at 4-4. Scott Litchy got the complete-game win on the mound, scattering seven hits with one earned run, three walks and six strikeouts. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a double. The Huskies led 2-0 after one inning and 3-2 after two innings were complete.

In Albany, the Huskies softball team beat Paynesville Area 3-1. An error by the Paynesville third baseman was the difference in the game. Albany took the lead when the ball bounced off the Bulldogs third baseman’s glove. It was followed by a single and a double to drive in two. That put Albany ahead for good as Paynesville’s only run came when Brooke Wuertz tripled in the fourth inning and scored on a passed ball. Karli Persson pitched a complete-game win with three hits against no walks and eight strikeouts. The Huskies batters struck out only twice in the game but tallied only four hits against Paynesville's Megan Schaefer.

Huskies baseball downs Foley

At Foley on Monday night, the #21-ranked Albany Huskies baseball team took a two-run lead in the 8th inning and held on for a 4-2 win over the #15-ranked Falcons. Tony Schoenberg and Dylan Panek split pitching duties while holding Foley (4-4) to two hits in the game.

 The Huskies improve to 3-4 overall while preparing for a tough conference test against #20-ranked Paynesville Area (2-3) this Thursday on the road.

Albany baseball loses to Pierz

The Albany Huskies baseball team lost 4-2 tonight to Pierz. It's their second loss in a two-day span, and they are now 2-4 overall. Albany's next game is on Monday at Foley. In their home track and field invite, the Albany Huskies boys' squad claimed second-place with 102 team points. Little Falls won the boys' title with 135.5 points, while Sauk Centre was third with 45.5 points.

Albany track and field meet is postponed to Friday

The meet will start at 4:15 p.m. It was originally scheduled for Thursday but was moved due to the cold and also wet field conditions.

Other teams included are Holdingford, Little Falls, Mora, Sauk Centre and Upsala/Swanville Area.

Huskies blow early lead to Melrose in baseball border battle; Huskies softball edges Melrose

After building a 4-1 lead in the early stages of their game in Avon today, the Albany Huskies baseball team lost 9-5 to crosstown rival Melrose Area in West Central North Conference action. It was the Dutchmen's first win of the season after opening up with four losses.

The Huskies fall to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the WCC-North; they travel to Pierz (1-3) on Friday (5 p.m.) in a non-conference game. It will be the first meeting of the two teams since 2009, when Pierz won in Albany 5-2 during a 7-0 start to their season.

Both Albany and Pierz are in Sub-Section 6AA-East, while Melrose Area is in Sub-Section 6AA-West.

The Huskies baseball team is ranked #21 in the latest Class 2A coaches poll.

In WCC-North fastpitch softball action, the #4-ranked Huskies defeated visiting Melrose Area 11-6 with Karli Persson and Hannah Navratil splitting pitching duties. The Huskies led 7-0 through four innings before the Dutchmen got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Albany improves to 6-0; Melrose falls to 2-5 overall. The Huskies are next in action at home against Paynesville Area on Thursday, Apr. 26.

Huskies baseball loses to Becker - Girls' golf ties for second in WCC-North opener

The Albany Huskies baseball team lost 5-1 to Becker on Tuesday night in a non-conference game. Their next action is on Thursday when they host I-94 rival Melrose Area in Avon at 5 p.m.

The Dutchmen (0-4) lost 8-5 to Minnewaska Area on Tuesday night in Glenwood.

The Albany girls' golf team tied for second-place (with NL-S) with a score of 198 behind champion Minnewaska Area in the West Central North Conference opener on Tuesday night. The Lakers, who placed third in last year's Class 2A state meet, had a top-four scorecard totaling 166. The Huskies girls' golf team is next in action at New London-Spicer on Friday in another WCC-North meet.

Albany Huskies survive challenge from Minnewaska

The Albany Huskies softball team moved to 5-0 on the season with a 12-7 win at Minnewaska Area.

The Lakers (2-1) spotted the Huskies three runs in the first inning before scoring four of their own to go up 4-3.

Albany led 6-4 after three innings were in the book.

Both teams were undefeated coming into the game.

Action from the 4th and 5th innings...

Albany (5-0) travels to former conference rival Long Prairie-Grey Eagle next Monday against a Thunder squad that is in Sub-Section 6AA-West. The Huskies are in Sub-Section 6AA-East.

Key softball conference showdown today is at Minnewaska

The 4th-ranked Albany Huskies softball team puts its undefeated (4-0) record on the line today at 2-0 Minnewaska Area, where the two teams will square off in a clash of West Central North Conference powers.

The Lakers defeated Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 8-6 in their season opener before prevailing over Paynesville Area 7-4 on Tuesday this week in their WCC-North opener.

Today's game will be aired on KASM 1150 AM.

Also in action today are the Albany baseball team (home vs. Minnewaska) and the Albany girls' golf team (at Becker).

Huskies softball turns back Sauk Centre

Against one of their top competitors in the West Central North Conference, the Albany Huskies softball team (4-0) blanked Sauk Centre tonight 5-0 on the home diamond.

The win came only a day after the Huskies drubbed Little Falls 20-0 in six innings for their third win of the year.

On Monday this week, the Albany Huskies baseball team lost 16-3 in five innings to undefeated Little Falls.

Albany fastpitch softball starts season 2-0

On Friday, Mar. 30, the Albany Huskies traveled to Holdingford in their 2012 season opener and picked up a 5-4 win over the Huskers.

On April 5, the Huskies hosted Royalton and blanked the Royals 18-0 behind a no-hit pitching performance by senior Karli Persson. Albany's next action in softball is at Little Falls (high school complex) next Monday at 5 p.m.

The Albany Huskies baseball team hosts Little Falls next Monday (Apr. 9) at 5 p.m. in Avon. They defeated Holdingford earlier this week by a 6-2 score.
