Albany boys' basketball wins season opener in overtime

The Albany Huskies boys' basketball team started their season 1-0 with a 71-66 overtime win at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle tonight.

While it was a non-conference game, the win was big in the sense that both teams are members of Sub-Section 6AA-North.

Up next: the Huskies travel to neighboring rival Melrose Area in a non-conference game next Friday, Dec. 7. It will be the season opener for the Dutchmen, who split the West Central North Conference series with Albany last year.

This year, Albany is a new member of the Granite Ridge Conference, although they compete with the Dutchmen in the same sub-section at playoff time.

Albany Huskies girls' basketball starts 2-0

The Albany Huskies beat Holdingford 75-50 in a border battle girls' basketball game on Thursday night to open the 2012-13 season with a 2-0 record.

They beat another neighboring rival, Rocori, 66-43 on Tuesday night in their season opener.

Up next: a .500 Pierz team (1-1) travels to Albany next Tuesday night in another non-conference game. The Huskies beat the Pioneers in last year's playoff opener.
